Weird SMTP timeouts

Then try

1:   tcpdump 'host smtp.helmsbriscoe.com' -w smtp-problem.cap
2:   start sendmail/telnet
3:   quit tcpdump
4:   transport smtp-problem.cap back to a machine that can run
     ethereal
5:   ethereal -r smtp-problem.cap


Other things you can play with without X:  tethereal and iptraf
