external client using IMAP to access mail server

Another option is to set up a VPN (e.g., openvpn) on that box, if you're 
not comfortable opening your IMAP-SSL port to the general world.  I did 
that recently, and it works nicely.  I VPN in, and then just access the 
unencrypted IMAP port.
