Suggestions on notebook

Speaking of battery life: I have a Dell X300 on which I can slow the
clock speed by a factor of 2. I would really like to be able to slow
it by a factor of 10, or even 100. A text editor in a virtual console
should still be able to keep up with my typing. Do any current
machines allow for really low clock speeds? Or for running with the
display light off?
