Linux install problems

I believe you have to actually have the en_US.UTF-8 locale (or en_US, or some 
other non-C locale) installed or generated for this to work.

The manpage for locale-gen(8) may help you in this department (I think this is 
a standard command and it looks like what you want, but I confess I haven't 
actually used it because the Debian locales package has a fancy magic debconf 
config widget).
