This might be true. I wrote my own ASN.1 parser about 10 years ago.
Essentially, ASN.1 is a way to encode binary data in a standard way. If
you are going to do your own application, then using a home-grown
protocol is probably much better. ASN.1 is a much more general protocol.
It was used by SNMP, which is where I was introducted to it.
