emacs question: suppressing backslashes

the 'set-variable' command is how you do it. 
The 'describe-variable' command tells you what the variable contains. 

Also, if you manually set variables, that variable is only set for the
session. You can set variables in your .emacs file(GNU):
(setq auto-save-default nil)
