Grub on MBR just won't "take"

Gordon,
Thanks - I've just tried that again.  Grub tells me it was successful in
installing to the MBR on (hd0,0).  However, it's still not being found when
rebooting, and so we're not even getting to grub at all.  Ever hear of a
hard drive that you just can't boot from?
