Subject: WebTech Tuesday 3/16 - J2ME on BlackBerry

Hi everyone,

This month's meeting of tht Boston ACM WebTech group will be on Tuesday,
March 16, 7 to 9 pm, at the IBM SPC in Waltham. Details and directions
at http://www.acm.org/chapters/webtech.

The feature presentation this month will be by Arun Nagajaran from Pyxis
Consulting, on "Software Development with J2ME on the BlackBerry."

Java is being used more and more on portable devices, and this
presentation will provide a lot of insight into this important topic. I
hope to see you there!

Abstract:
Arun will talk about the process of software development with J2ME on
the BlackBerry, pros and cons, and comparisons to other platforms such
as the PocketPC with the .NET Compact Framework on the Windows Mobile OS.

The presentation will list design considerations to adhere to while
building highly robust applications on a mobile device with limited
bandwidth and processing power with a non-tech savvy target user base.
Specifically some of the issues addressed - caching, multi-threaded
processing, authentication, data persistence, UI look and feel,
background processing, and handling network outages. The RIM BlackBerry
mobile device is very popular among investment professionals and large
enterprises. Arun will discuss the BlackBerry architecture and highlight
reasons for its popularity.

The presentation will also describe the development of the mWholesaler
product which was developed for the BlackBerry and is driven by .NET web
services. The presentation will include several demos and address real
life scenarios.

About the speaker:
Arun Nagarajan is a Technical Consultant with Pyxis Consulting. At
Pyxis, Mr. Nagarajan is very involved in the development of mobile and
wireless enabled enterprise solutions. He has worked extensively with
the J2ME platform as well as the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework. Mr.
Nagarajan has a BS in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University and
is a Sun Certified Java Programmer.
