This is not true.  You can use the ATAPI interface to burn cd's as

supports it, and I'm assuming others as well.  This route requires no 
recompiling of the kernel, loading of scsi modules, or kernel 
parameters.  Try: cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATAPI.  Make sure that you 
didn't pass the hdx=ide-scsi prarameter to the kernel at boot.
