gnome, emacs and tabs

AFAIK, emacs 21.2.1 will not display tab as an octal or as ^I:
The emacs variable, ctl-arrow, is the one that controls how control
characters are displayed in buffers, but the documentation states that
tab characters are always displayed as whitespace.
