System cracked, a story



A couple of suggestions... details withheld because I'm not an expert :-)

+ Investigate Bastille hardening scripts. I believe there is some support
for Debian.
+ You're wise not to trust your logs... one "trick" people do with snort is
run it on a different system... one with NO IP address (nic is set to
promiscious mode to capture the network data...).

chattr might not have protected your passwd file... the exploit that
modified your passwd could also have reset attributes on passwd to make it
mutable. Maybe the script used to root you wouldn't have that feature, but I
assume a decent one would try.

With the new install, I suggest a closer look at what services and ports you
have exposed to the internet and maybe tightening your firewall.
