Another question : tape drive

my idea is that they're pretty expensive to buy, expensive to feed, and
painfully slow...

i don't know if it will work for you, but the price and performance of
ide disks is hard to beat.  removable ide drive carriers are kinda
clunky.  i bought one of these instead:

now i can do my backups to my imac running os x.
