I haven't played with one yet, but I looked around for Linux software 
for it a couple years ago. I think I recall seeing a few projects on 
freshmeat.net, if you're looking for a full application. 

If you'd rather write your own, as you indicated, I'd suggest poking 
through CPAN to see if anyone wrote a perl module for GPS yet.
