Common document interchange format

Normally, I produce .doc files and .ppt files for my students to download
although I produce these with either Star Office 5.2 or Open Office 1.0.1
(There is a bug in OO that still requires my use of SO 5.2. The bug has
been fixed, but will not be released until the next release of OO).

I use .doc and .ppt as the lowest common denominator because most word
processors and presentation managers can read these files. AFAIK: .doc and
.ppt are more common than the MS Word 97/2000/XP .doc or MS PowerPoint
97/2000/XP .ppt formats.
