Why are modelines so obscure?

I have a Gateway FPD2200 Flatpanel (22" 16x9 aspect ratio) capable of
1600x1024. and for the life of me I can't figure out a modeline to get it
to
run at that resolution!

The info I have is this:
res hFreq vFreq
1600 x 1024 64.350 60

I've tried guessing at a few modelines but the best I can get the monitor
to run is 1280x1024.

Does anyone know of a site that actually explains in _english_ (aka not in
geek) how to figure out modelines.
yes I've tried google, the few explinations that exist are in geek. I
require one in english.
