assuming you have an RPM based system, the general form "rpm -qf file"
will tell you what RPM any file came from.

e.g.

/home/mcmanus>rpm -qf /bin/ls
fileutils-4.1-4

Then you can go to rpmfind.net, type "fileutils" into the search box
and find the source rpm fileutils-4.1-4 that is associated with your
distribution.
