Well, the WD 110MB drive in my original 486 lasted many, many years. ;-)

I've heard good things about both Maxtor & WD. My current preference is 
Maxtor, since features being about equal, Maxtor wins on price. It's truly 
a shame that IBM drives have gone downhill. They used to be the best of the 
best. :-(
