pgp/gnupg



some folks are really into the privacy aspects - via encryption..

however, to me, the authentication is more import.. email is extremely
easy to forge (and just a little bit harder to forge well).. good
public key cryptography lets you know who you're talking to with a
higher degree of certainty.
