buying HOWTOs, where?



Most of the Howtos are available in PDF format.

Additionally there are several guides that are also available in pdf format:

Just go the the top level of the Linux Doc site. Lots of good things.

The intent of the howtos is that they are available as a quick reference. 
Some distributions also include the howto on their CDs (SuSE for 
instance).
