What is /etc/host.conf

Running 'man host.conf' (under Mandrake 7.2 and 8.0, at least) gives a description of its use. The man page isn't particularly useful and looks like it's basically an nsswitch.conf, but for resolving hostnames only, which makes me wonder which takes priority on hostnames, that or nsswitch.conf. Weird.
