What URL are you trying to go to? If you try

http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html

does it work?  I assume you really do have an index.html in the
DocumentRoot, and that it is readable by everybody.  If that works, the
problem may be the DirectoryIndex command, which determines what order to
look for default files in a directory if none specified.

What about trying to access the default page Apache leaves: the "If you
can see this then you sucessfully installed Apache, now add content." page
