Linux newbie

All-

I'm new to the linux world, and am having an issue with running:

1.make menuconfig and 2.make xconfig

For make menuconfig , the book I'm reading told me I needed to install ncurses-devel. I did, but still got error messages.

The following are the errors that I got from executing each one of the above commands.
