servers [T20000919006H] (fwd)

--------

| Generally, it is not permitted, due to bandwidth concerns. However,
| you are free to run such a server if you wish, although we cannot offer
| technical support for it. Please be forewarned that we do not at this
| time offer static IP addresses for cable modem accounts (although such a
| feature is coming), and therefore the cable modem's IP address may
| change if needed by the network administrators.
| Thank you very much.

One of the things that Mediaone did (last year anyway) that RCN
didn't was to provide a DNS name. Your machine would have a name like
foo.ne.mediaone.com. If they changed the address, you would be
inaccessible for the couple of hours that it took for the change to
make its way around the DNS system. Last I heard, a machine on RCN's
cable service was only accessible via IP address (or via a FQDN
derived from the IP address), and a real hostname was a somewhat
expensive extra charge. What's the story now?

Things like this are an obvious way for a company to charge extra for
what you may have thought was a part of "Internet service". If you
don't hear about it from them, you should probably assume that they
don't provide it, or charge extra once you realize that you need it.
