Help!! XFree86 4.0.1

I took the plung and installed XFree86 4.0.1 on my system. The install
when well and I get it running. the problem is it never asked me
anything
about my monitor and starts with the default settings so all I can get
is 640x480x8 :(
I know this because the log file says the other modes are 'out of range'
of either the
hsync or vsync. So, I have the numbers for my monitor, but _where_ do I
put them
I don't see anyplace in the new XF86Config layout for them.

Also how do I specify the default resolution/color depth in the new
layout. I didn't see
any resolution lines either.
