shells and bells



I'd have to agree with Mike on this one.  MySQL isn't free software. 
MySQL doesn't support transactions.  MySQL doesn't support referential
integrity constraints (to be fair, PostgreSQL has only added this
feature in 7.0, which is still a release candidate).  PostgreSQL has a
lot of additional data types, and is closer to SQL92 compliance (no
database is fully compliant).

I've heard people say MySQL can handle higher loads, but I suspect this
is simply because it avoids the overhead costs associated with
transaction processing, row locking, etc.

The PostgreSQL team has been firing on all cylinders recently.  They
have a lot of momentum, and a great product.  Plus the elephant logo is
cool.

All else considered, I think MySQL's licensing restrictions give me the
most pause.
