SB Live! question

Anyone out there familiar with setting up an SB Live! under Linux? I'm
running kernel 2.2.15pre15 with today's source snapshot on a new SB
Live! Value. The problem I am encountering is that between playing mp3s
on Xmms with the standard OSS output plugin and using "play (really
sox)," my pcm levels jump when switching from one to another. Often I
will play a .wav file and then go to play an mp3 and the volume will
jump to 100% pcm, despite the mixer showing the same level. The same
effect often happens after playing Quake 3, but the volume will play at
100% on the Xmms volume slider while still reading the normal volume
until I click the volume slider. Any ideas what's going on? It works
beautifically in the other OS. I only want my mixer sliders to not move
on me while switching between (or playing at the same time) wav files,
games, and mp3s. =) Thanks in advance, it is greatly appreciated.
