I must appologize.  After looking at my code for xplink, I realized that the 
routine that implements the 'ifconfig' loop is actually trying to determine
what the assigned IP address is.

To simply detect if the ppp link is up, I just look for the existence of
of the pppd pid file...

/var/run/ppp0.pid
