Configure scripts

I would like to thank everyone who responded. While my original question
was in terms of a distribuiton independent method, the intent was to have a
Unix-wide method. Normally, when I put things out to the community, I
may already know the answer, but I look for either confirmaiton that this is
the right way, or caveats, or alternatives. Basically, I have been
complaining about the way the configure scripts were written for one of the
products I partially develop because it breaks every time I upgrade my
Alpha Linux. After complaining for about 6 months, I finally got the "yeah,
we need to fix this, suggest a better way". Currently, we have targets for
Solaris (Intel and Sparc), Debian GNU/Linux, Red Hat Linux/Alpha.
