more on errant disk drive

Ok - as John points out, how can I expect to get a CDROM drive working
when I don't know what day it is?

But, we've put in a different CDROM drive, and the RedHat 5.0 kernel
is able to use it. So, we've found a CDROM drive that is somehow
not compatible with the Linux IDE driver (although the owner's manual
claims it's an enhanced IDE/ATAPI drive), that Win95 can access without
problems (it's embarassing - I can read the RedHat CDROM with Win95,
but not with RedHat Linux...).

I'll be checking with Acer to see if I can find out anything more about the
drive.
