Meeting Topic for February:

"Linux for College Students: Using Linux for the Practical Solution of
Computer Interfacing"

Presented by: Lar Kaufman <Lark at walden.com>, co-author of "Running Linux"

ABSTRACT

With many students now using personal and/or laptop computers to assist
them with school work, a problem soon becomes apparent to the student...
how to get the school computer and their machine to interoperate with each
other. Not only that, but how can you share files between different
platforms?

Lar Kaufman, co-author of "Running Linux", will be presenting practical
solutions to various computing problems using Linux. Most importantly, he
will illustrate how to take your computer & be able to interface with your
school's computer in order to share files on:

	*Chart Plotting *Graphics File Conversion
	*Word Processing	*Spreadsheets
	*Data

Lar will show how these things can be accomplished (without spending a ton
of money) and what is involved from his experiences as law student.

As an added bonus, he will also be answering questions on printing with
Linux.

The Boston Linux & Unix Group [BLU.ORG], is the successor to the Boston
Computer Society's Linux & Unix User Group. We want to promote the
awareness and use of Open Systems, and to educate the public and our
members about Open Systems.

Linux is a UNIX-like operating system built around POSIX standards.
>From its inception less than six years ago, it was developed over the
Internet by a group of people who (for the most part) have never seen
each other, and now runs on an (estimated) 1,000,000 computer systems.
The operating system (and the source code for it) is free to anyone
who wants it. It has been ported to at least the following platforms:
Intel, SPARC, Alpha, MIPS, PPC, and M68K. This is probably the largest
development project ever accomplished using the Internet.
