Based on the information you posted, while linux has been used very 
effectively, you already have an NT Server. Also, it appears that your company 
already has Windows NT expertise. If you have Unix expertise, Linux would fit, 
but I think that NT might be a better solution. As far as intrusion, I suggest 
that you acquire a router with firewall capabilities. Morningstar has been 
used effectively for that. I found that the Morningstar support people are 
very helpful and knowlegable. 

Don't try to use technologies where you have no expertise unless there is an overriding need to build that expertise. Build on the expertise that you already have, and add the expertise you need to get onto the Internet.
