FORTRAN on RedHat 2.1 not working

I loaded the FORTRAN compiler (and gcc, too) from
the RedHat 2.1 CDROM and I got the error:

   gcc: language f77 not recognized
ld:test.f: file format not recognized; treating as linker script
   ld:test.f:1: parse error

What is going wrong?
Have others gotten the FORTRAN to work?
