Thanks for the reply.  The bad news, and the reason for the problem,
was that the color signal made the screen partly unreadable.  The good
news is that I got the solution from volkerdi at mhd1.moorhead.msus.edu,
the author of the setup script.  All I had to do was replace /bin/dialog
with the corresponding file on the root disk.
