Wanted to ask about virtualizing local LAN network services (i.e. DHCP, DNS resovler, NTP, LPD, etc.) Putting them in a VM or linux container. 18:45 Many options. KVM, VMWare, VirtualBox, LXC, Docker. Pros/Cons Bad idea? 18:46 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jerry Feldman As I mentioned online I just put Windows 10 in a VM so my wife could layher games, and it seems to work ok. I think putting those in a vm or container should work, but remember the VM is in its own little subnet 18:48 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Bogstad It is possible to give a VM/container direct net access using a software bridge on the HOST OS That would be required to provide DHCP service on the local LAN 18:49 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jerry Feldman Yes, that is true. I used to do that with some of my vms especially if I wanteed to share some stuff 18:50 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edward Piecewicz I have four VirtualBoxes installed on my desktop. They run minimally slower and slightly sluggish, but they work. 18:50 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Abreau I've found that bridging works well, but when the VM server uses ordinary SATA drives, it really bogs down if I run more than two or three VMs simultaneously. 18:51 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Bogstad I'm mostly wondering if people have opinions on which of the VM/container technologies would work best for this. At the moment I'm leaning towards LXC 18:51 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Abreau I understand that's why most professional deployments use things like fiberchannel, which I have zero experience with. 18:52 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Bogstad The kind of thing I'm thinking about doesn't require alot of resources, but does need high availability. Being able to move a VM/container to a new machine quickly due to hardware failure would be a plus. 18:53 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jerry Feldman I dont think disk speed is that much of an issue unless the vms are all actively using the drives or swapping. 18:54 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Ricker re uncooperative mic I'm using an Ancroid tablet for mic/spkr and a Linux desktop for camera and keyboard chat ... if i turned on the android's camera you'd get a nice up-nostril shot. 18:54 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Bogstad The only thing I'm theoretically worried about is a local NTP server as that needs very precise timing with local hardware clock. 18:54 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jerry Feldman I just moved the windows 10 vm to my wife's laptop. The only issue initially was that I still had the iso file in use on windows, so I had to move that too. 18:55 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Bogstad BR. Is that the other Bill whose camera is off? 18:55 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Ricker BB - yes. I am 2 out of 3 Bills here. 18:56 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jerry Feldman For virt-manager you only need 2 files, the xml file and qcow file 18:56 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Abreau Could always stick the NTP server on a raspberry pi and the other stuff on the VMs 18:56 I've also found that slow, unresponsive DNS is often the cause of everything else feeling slow. Might make sense to keep DNS on something fast, too. 18:58 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Ricker 👍 18:59 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Bogstad BR so you heard me? 18:59 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Ricker No, that 👍 was for JABR's comment on DNS The screen still says BB is muted. Which means either your Jitsi doesn't see a MIC or sees it as off in JitSi AHA BB is now unmuted 19:00 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Bogstad I'm unmute now. I'm going to start singing if anybody hears anthing let me know. 19:00 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Ricker too late, speaker is starting ! 19:00 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Abreau I muted eveyone except Tom 19:01 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Ricker i confirm that downstream on the YT stream got the FullScreen as well 19:03 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- MB Thanks Tom! 19:46 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edward Piecewicz Thanks! 19:46 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Bogstad Always interesting! 19:49 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- MB Thanks again! 19:51 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
